Riding a boat along Saen Saep Canal is a fun and affordable way to see a different side of Bangkok. It also can take you to places other transportation options don't go. Bang Kapi Mall is about 35 minutes from Asoke Pier by boat. There is no subway or train option but you can take a bus or cab, both of which will take longer depending on traffic. The boat is loud and can be crowded but you will see things you would otherwise miss. Saen Sarp Canal (Khlong Saen Saep) was constructed between 1837 and 1840 as a way to transport soldiers and supplies during a conflict between Siam (Thailand) and Annam (Vietnam) over Cambodia. It is 72 km long and passes through 21 districts, connecting to more than 100 smaller canals.
