Climbing and camping on Mount Agung, 3,142 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain on the island of Bali, Indonesia. For Balinese Hindus, the mountain is considered the abode of the gods, and mountains are sacred. We, a group of four, began our climb from the Edelweiss trail in Besakih at 9 a.m. and arrived at Post Five at 4 p.m. Beautiful moss forests and a moderately challenging but long trail. We set up camp just before the Mount Agung vegetation boundary, where there's a small spring. Enjoying the warm food we made and a cup of coffee warmed us up. Some of the campsites were a bit dirty due to the trash left behind by climbers, which was quite disappointing considering the beautiful views from here. We could see the lights of Denpasar from above. After a night's sleep, we woke at 3 a.m. for breakfast and preparations for the summit. At 4 a.m., we resumed our journey, which took about two hours. The weather was quite cold, oxygen was scarce, and we had to cross the vegetation boundary, which was filled with steep rocks. Slowly but surely. Sure enough, we arrived at 6 a.m., the sun rising early. Some climbers had already arrived earlier. The beauty of Bali is undeniable, despite the occasional fog, rain, and storms. We had our own luck, and everything went our way.
