A presentation by Nancy Darling & Lucas Mendicino at the iPain 2020 Summit 11/14/20 Although doctors and medical professionals recommend treatments for adolescents living with life-changing persistent pain, it's parents who have to implement them. This presentation describes research applying the concepts of the legitimacy of parental authority and obligation to obey to understanding how adolescents think about pain rehabilitation. Previous research has shown that adolescents are more likely to follow rules in some domains than others. Specifically, they are most likely to listen to parents and not to lie about safety issues. They are much more likely to lie when they believe the issue is personal and outside the legitimate domain of parental authority. When adolescents resist by lying or hiding their non-compliance, parents tend to become more intrusive, resulting in a negative cycle of lying, distrust, and non-compliance. This research applies those ideas to understanding how adolescents think about traditional medical treatment and the lifestyle changes often recommended as part of a wraparound pain treatment program. Results indicate that adolescents tend to think about traditional medical treatment similarly to how they think about prudential issues - legitimate and something they should follow rules about. Lifestyle changes are treated much more likely personal issues. Visit us at 1step2life.com to see how these ideas and others are applied to support adolescents living with chronic pain.
