By taking blood cultures from the back of the cannula when it is inserted (it is not gold standard practice to take blood cultures from a cannula, but it avoids having to use two needles on the same patient) 2. By taking blood cultures from a butterfly needle as well as inserting a cannula for the blood transfusion (this is gold standard practice with regards to taking blood cultures, but involves using two needles on the same patient).
