Happy 424th birthday, dear my kamioshi, @UtanoPandora ! Please enjoy my birthday present for you, Tides (Bossa Nova Version). Also Ed GIGACHAD for the cover art, it is like 10 times more beautiful than what I imagined. This song is actually a "karaoke version" (you can just replace the piano melody with vocal). It would be interesting to hear Panda sing this, because I know Panda can sing jazz really well! Unfortunately, the key of this song is in G Major (and changes to D Major in the middle), which is A LOT higher than the original song. Well... it was supposed to be for my vocal range. Unfortunately I ran out of time to just made this music, let alone practice singing and stuff. Original song: • 【ORIGINAL SONG】Tides - Utano Pandora Cover Art commissioned to: https://x.com/FreakyEd === Let's talk about the stories and thoughts behind this composition! First of all, this is for the first time I spent 3 months in a single song. Obviously, there are a crazy amount of detail that I won't be able to explain everything. Also, this is the first time I learn about music producing. As you might know, I can compose, but I know nothing about producing. After 1 year of making music digitally, I just found out about EQ! Wow! I am learning a lot from this project, which will be VERY useful for my projects in the future. Okay, let's talk about the thoughts behind the composition. === 1. The first time I listened to Tides during premiere, I immediately thought of the Bossa Nova version. It kinda makes sense you know, because of tides, beachside, stuff like that. And it's also aligned with my new year resolution of learning how to Jazz. 2. The first thing that I compose is the piano solo. After I composed the solo, I was singing the piano solo in the shower. But then, after singing the solo, I accidentally sung it in D Major (which is not the key it is in). It became a very nice and subtle modulation; you might not even notice when the song changes key. At the final product, the song starts in G Major, changed momentarily to A Major, back to G Major, then D Major, then G Major, then D Major, then both G Major and D Major at the same time (two keys at once!), and finally ends in G Major. The key changes are very subtle and natural, I'm very proud of it! It is interesting to write a chord progression that works both in G Major and D Major. I know I can spam Maj9 theoretically, but still it sounds a lot nicer than I thought. 3. The outro was originally just a copy paste from the intro. If you know me, you know how much I hate just straight up copy and paste in a music; there's always something different on how you play it. But unfortunately, I got really sick and hospitalized near the end of this project. That copy paste from the intro was the backup plan. But then, I recovered just in time. The outro that you hear was composed AFTER Panda's birthday stream (and after Ed sent the cover art). The sunset really inspired me to completely change the outro, and luckily I finished it in 2 hours. It sounds WAAAAAY nicer than just copy paste from the intro. 4. The vibe of the song is obviously chilling on the beach, summer, sunset, tides. This was built into the composition. For instance, an easter egg is how there's literally a chord progression from Joe Hisaishi's Summer in the song. 5. Even though I'm very happy with the piano solo, my favourite part is actually the guitar and the saxophone. This is the first time I write a music with guitar, and damn it sounds so sweet. I remembered watching Jacob Collier explaining him discovering guitar from Paul David's interview, and it inspired this whole part. 6. For the first time, I am happy with the phrasing on the saxophone. I learned a lot of tricks during this project and also listen to a lot of solo saxophone; the one that inspired me the most is definitely Garrett Wingfield. I love how it feels he's singing through the saxophone whenever he played. It's really hard to replicate digitally, especially when I never even touch a saxophone. 7. This project made me realized how much I love writing basslines. It might not be the best, but I just love the thoughts and the process. One thing that inspired me the most is definitely when Victor Wooten said "a good bassline will make him (the guitarist) sound better". It completely changed my perspective on bass. 8. Finally, I always thought EQ was something to make a certain frequency sound louder/quieter. Technically it is true, but the implication is it changed how the instrument sounds. The moment I realized that, it completely blew my mind. This is the first time I am tweaking the EQ, so I apologize if it's not the best. But I know it's better than before I play around with the EQ, so that's good! === Final story, GIGACHAD Ed for changing Panda to ponytail after the 3D Model reveal. Thank you for listening my music and I will be cooking a lot more in the future!
