Hiking in Cocora Valley and the Santa Rita Falls - An Awesome Adventure in Salento - Vlog #66

Today's adventure takes place around the town of Salento. It is one of the more popular small towns in Colombia, at least for those coming from Medellín. The Cocora Valley is the poster child for the area with the main draw being the rather large palm trees. Many an Instagram picture has been taken there. You take a jeep taxi from town to the entrance and then you have a choice: A short 20-30 minute walk straight to the trees and a view or a 4-5 hour loop trail which winds through the valley before coming back to the same place. Being the avid hiker, I opted for the long way round and it was an awesome wee trek, it touch on the long side, but varied enough that the time slipped by nicely. Starting with a lovely view of the open plain of the valley I soon ended up in the trees following the river into the jungle. There are numerous waterfalls, bridge crossings and I ended up at a little rest shelter where for a small fee they offer you a hot drink and a place to watch a bunch of humming birds flitting around. The rest stop is a minor detour at the turning point, but from there I began the hard part, the climb out of the valley. This was quite the sweat making pump but breaking out above the tree lines, and despite some clouds and rain, the views are stunning! Funnily enough I then began to descend to get down the main viewpoints with the trees and so on. Naturally these were quite amazing views and were of course much busier than the rest of the walk! I was glad to have these at the end as it rounded out an awesome little adventure in Cocora Valley. The following day I headed out to find the Santa Rita falls. This turned into another mini adventure. Getting to the falls was a fairly simple trek which rewards you with a sweet little waterfall. From there I delved in a bit further find a couple more falls, each a little different and great to see! Deciding on the way back to complete a loop I ended up on a rather interesting path. Coming across a big tunnel, another pretty waterfall and an awesome view with the soon setting sun. Salento was quite the awesome place for an adventure!
