Coyote hunting: he lives to fight another day

One of our last big winter coyote hunting trips of the season turned into a long, unforgettable day. My buddy BJ and I head out at 4:30 AM for a 2.5-hour drive into the middle of nowhere with miles of blueberry fields, farmland, and prime predator country. This is the same area where we previously saw two coyotes (killing one), so expectations were high. On our third stand, things got intense. We bumped a smart, cagey coyote who was likely the mate of one we harvested on a previous trip. After an hour-long stand with no response, we launched the drone and tracked him through the snow for over a kilometer. Instead of cutting into the woods, he looped the edge of his territory and gave us the slip. Some coyotes learn fast. Later in the day, we spotted another coyote at 641 yards. I had him in the crosshairs, but with the dog moving and the range pushing ethical limits, I passed on the shot. To top it off, we buried my truck in a ditch and had to call in local help to get pulled out by tractor. Long day. Frozen gear. No coyotes on the tailgate... but still a great day!
