A conversation on common factors with Dr. Sean Davis who is an expert in common factors, and Dr. Afarin Rajaei. We talked about the following questions: 1. Please introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your professional background. 2. Could you please tell us a little bit about common factors as an introduction? Is it a theory? Approach? Framework? 3. What is your conceptualization of the therapeutic relationship? 4. Can you tell us about that practice you do with your students in Theories class about going to nature? I think it is very helpful for all of us. 5. What is the role of diversity, social justice, and inclusion in common factors? 6. I often tell my students that all tools and interventions they learn here are great. But maybe the greatest tool you have in therapy is “who you are”. Could you please tell us more about the “way of beings”? 7. The other thing that I ask my students to reflect on is how do they want others/clients to experience themselves in their presence? Whatever their response is, is it something that they have within themselves? How often do they practice that in their daily lives? what do you think about that? 8. It can be a controversial debate. But some people say you can be a great therapist in the therapy room, and a horrible person outside of therapy, in your life. While others believe that is not possible. Others believe that you can give others whatever you have within yourself. What do you think about that? 9. You’ve been in this field for a long time and have contributed to the C/MFT field a lot. Can you give us some examples of your takeaways from using common factors? Anything that surprised you or challenged you? 10. What is one thing you would tell the younger version of yourself, maybe when you were an MFT student about becoming a therapist?
