NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE PARISH #6: IRBY Welcome to Irby upon Humber, or as its officially known, Irby. This is a small village lying on the Western fringe of North East Lincolnshire, around two miles away from Laceby on the A46 Irby lies on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, and as you might expect, there are some lovely scenic views around the village, if you know where to go. It’s a rural gem, hidden in plain sight Irby’s population at present is rather modest. Historically, the village was thriving, populated by people who worked in a local chalk quarry. In 1840, it had as many as 263 inhabitants, more than double that of today. One of the current residents here though is David Court, the current Bishop of Grimsby. In the mid 16th century, the Lord of the Manor was Denzil Holles, a grandson of William Holles, a former Lord Mayor of London. One of their descendants, Gervase Holles, fought on the Royalist side in the English Civil War, and Irby has a little known landmark here relating to it There are several villages in England with the name Irby, including Irby in the Marsh which is in East Lindsey. Its likely the “upon Humber” and “in the Marsh” suffixes were added to differentiate them I’m a little surprised there aren’t more Irby’s than there actually are. According to David Mills in A Dictionary of British Place-Names, Irby means the “settlement or village of the Irish” It’s Grimsby’s very own bit of Ireland then!. Its Irby.
