What If Ned Stark Told Robert Baratheon His Children Were Bastards? Let’s explore the depths of it in the video. Ned stares up in shock at the sight of Robert’s injuries. Whatever that boar did, it wasn’t good, and when he looks up at Maester Pycelle, the old man shakes his head. Lord Stark clenches his fist, wondering if he can summon the resolve to continue with what he has to do. Robert: Why do you look so pained, Ned? You’re not the one who got gored. Weak laugh. Ned: Your grace, there is something I must tell you. A matter concerning the realm. Robert: Groans. Matters of the realm? Even now? Can’t a man get some rest? Ned: I’m afraid it cannot. It is regarding your children. And Jon Arryn. This matter might be what killed Lord Arryn. Robert: Pauses. I’m listening. Ned: He was looking at something, a book of lineages and the previous Baratheon children. All of them are black in hair…even those who wed the Targaryens. Yet all your children have golden hair. The hair of Lannisters. I believe that Jon Arryn and your brother Stannis were looking into this matter, and someone silenced him. Robert: Ned…what you’re suggesting. Groans. It would be a death penalty if you publicly accuse the crown of this. Incest, Ned. What proof do you have? That a few Baratheons a few generations back have black hair. If Cersei demands your head, I doubt I would be able to protect you. Ned: The queen knows…I confronted her on it, and she said The Targaryens married their sisters and brothers… For a moment, there is silence. Robert can only look on as he processes what he just heard. The confusion and shock slowly turn into anger as he grips the side of his bed. For a moment, his old strength seems to come back as he pushes himself up with a roar. But then he seems to feel his age as he slumps back down and shudders, groning against the bed and leaning over, cursing. Robert: groan How could this have happened? Ned looks over at the king, tempted to speak out and say just how this might have happened, but as he sees the pain in Robert’s eyes, Ned holds his tongue and gently guides him back to the bed. Ned: It doesn’t matter how this might have happened. What matters is what we shall do with it. Cersei all but confirmed it. That means Joffrey is not your heir, nor are any of her children. Stannis shall inherit. Robert nods, but even in his pained state, he knows he cannot declare them bastards born of incest without proof. And even with proof, the Lannisters will fight tooth and nail to disprove it. As they sit and try to think of a way out of it, Robert finds his head pounding as he struggles to think of a solution. That is until he roars and nearly passes out from frustration. Robert: roars Damnit, I am no politician. I know nothing about sculking and scheming. Ned: No, but you know Cersei. For a moment, there is a strange twinkle in Robert’s eye that replaces his exhaustion. He takes a pen and paper and orders Ned to write things down. His previous deeds and some old stories regarding Cersei. After hours of work, Robert closes his eyes and smiles. As his strength leaves him, he leaves Ned with his last line of defense. Ned rejects Renly’s proposal to stage a coup and instead calls court the next day to discuss what shall happen moving forward. As the courtiers gather, Cersei approaches with a long trail of men-at-arms and knights. Though Ned accepts the City Watch’s aid for a generous donation, he is far from certain of their help. Ned: We are here to discuss the succession in the aftermath of King Robert’s death. Although in most cases, Prince Joffrey would normally be crowned king, in his last moments, the king has entrusted me with this letter. He says that it has come to his attention that his heir, Joffrey, and his siblings’ legitimacy has been thrown into question due to them being children born of adultery. The crowd erupts into gasps, and they look out in surprise. A few mutter amongst themselves, and the guardsmen tense as Cersei glares at him, clenching her fist. Joffrey is even more furious. Cersei: Is this some sort of jest, Lord Stark? Our king lies dead, and you stand there, throwing insults and questioning his honor! Eddard: I am reading the King’s words, your grace. And perhaps you should listen to the rest of his letter before passing judgment. While I am not certain who her lover is, what I would like to stress is that I do not blame her for her decision. I had fathered multiple baseborn children, as you may know. My son, Edric Storm, who resides in Storm’s End; a girl named Mya Stone in the Vale who serves Lady Waynwood; and more bastards in this very city that I dare not count. I will not condemn my queen for her actions, but I also cannot, in good conscience, allow them to rule without letting the people know the truth. This is just the beginning of my misdeeds- #gameofthrones #whatif #gameofthroneswhatif
