Intro: 00:00 Instructions: 00:06 Sample Words: 01:46 Outro: 03:15 Both TH sounds are made by touching the tip of the tongue to the edges of the front teeth. For the Voiced TH sound, /ð/, the tip of the tongue vibrates as air flows around the tongue and through the upper teeth while the vocal cords vibrate. If the tongue is not properly placed between the teeth a /d/ or /z/ sound may be produced. Sample words: THIS and THE For the Voiceless TH, /θ/, the tongue tip also touches the edges of the front teeth while air flows around the tongue and through the upper teeth. However, for the voiceless TH the vocal cords are NOT activated. There is more airflow and a "breathy" quality to this sound. If the tongue is not properly placed for the Voiceless TH sound, an /S/ sound can result.
