This video contains instructions on the production of the Voiced TH Sound, /ð/, and the /d/ sound - as well as listening and speaking practice in the form of Minimal Pairs. (Minimal Pairs are two words that sound the same EXCEPT FOR one sound.) The /ð/ sound is called the Voiced TH because production of this sound requires the use of your vocal cords. To make this sound, a relaxed tongue rests between the top and bottom teeth. Air flows through the teeth and around the tongue while the vocal cords vibrate. The Voiced TH is a continuant sound because the sound can be held as long as your breath lasts. For many people who have difficulty with the TH mouth position, the Voiced TH ends up sounding like /d/. The /d/ sound is also a voiced sound - but it is not a continuant sound and it requires a different mouth position. To produce the /d/ sound, the tongue tip presses the gum ridge just behind and above the front teeth before quickly releasing. Listen to and repeat the minimal pairs in order to hone your ear and practice the proper mouth positions for each sound.
