We left Canada to escape winter. It was our first time as RV snowbirds and it turned out to be one RV trip we’ll never forget - camping through a once-in-a-century snowstorm on the beach! ❄️☀️ In this episode, we take you along on our winter RV journey from Canada to the Florida Panhandle, with a few surprising twists along the way. From dodging ice storms on I-81 to rerouting down the East Coast, our adventure took us through Winchester, Savannah, and Northern Florida's Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park — before finally reaching Panama City Beach and St. Andrews State Park. Just as we settled in at St. Andrews State Park, nature had one more surprise in store: a history-making snowstorm that blanketed the white sands in snow, shut down roads, and created one of the most surreal camping scenes we’ve ever experienced. Snowballs on the beach, a tiny snowman by the Gulf, and a Florida State of Emergency — sure, it was cold, but it was unforgettable. In this episode: 🌨️ Outrunning a Storm and Digging our RV out of a Snowy Virginia Storage Yard 🛣️ Changing routes to avoid freezing rain 🎶 Exploring the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park and its 97-Bell Carillon 🏖️ Camping in Ocean-Front Sites at St. Andrews State Park (and Sunset Outdoors RV Resort) ❄️ Experiencing a historic Florida snowstorm After more than 45 years of camping, this was a trip we’ll never forget — a reminder that sometimes the best adventures happen when things don’t go as planned. Our mission as first-time RV Snowbirds - escape the harsh northern winter for two months. Due to a significant winter storm forecast we departed Canada 2 days ahead of schedule headed for Winchester Virginia where he had left our trailer in storage in November. We dug the trailer out of the unusual snows Virginia had already received and hit the road about 8 hours ahead of the newest storm. With significant freezing rain predicted for our original route we were no longer headed for northern Georgia and Atlanta on our way to the panhandle via I81, but instead headed for I95 and an easterly route down the coast. This brought us to the Savannah South KOA where we dewinterized the trailer and eventually to the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park with its 97 bell carillon and a unique camping experience. Eventually, we made it to Panama City Beach two days ahead of schedule and spent them at Sunset Outdoors RV Resort before eventually heading to St. Andrews State Park for a 2-week stay. Known for its amazing white sand beaches and waterfront campsites St Andrews was a wonderful Park. But it was a campground with a unique experience awaiting us....a freak 100-year winter storm that would dump more than 4 inches of snow on that part of Florida. Extreme cold and storm warnings were posted and a State of Emergency was declared as the area was paralyzed for 2 days. This was actually a fascinating camping experience and exploring the beach the next day was magical. The line where the white sand and 4 inches of snow met didnt look real, snowballs were thrown into the ocean and even a small snowman was erected on the Florida beach - it made for some wonderful memories. After more than 45 years of camping, this was a trip we’ll never forget — a reminder that sometimes the best adventures happen when things don’t go as planned.
