The LLNL-led MFEM (Modular Finite Element Methods) project provides high-order mathematical calculations for large-scale scientific simulations. The project’s first community workshop was held virtually on October 20, 2021, with participants around the world. Learn more about MFEM at https://mfem.org/. Qi Tang of Los Alamos National Laboratory described his team’s development of an efficient, scalable solver for tokamak plasma simulations. Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are important for studying plasma systems, but efficient numerical solutions for MHD are extremely challenging due to disparate time and length scales, strong hyperbolic phenomena, and nonlinearity. Tang’s team has developed a high-order stabilized finite element algorithm for incompressible resistive MHD equations based on MFEM, which provides physics-based preconditioners, adaptive mesh refinement, parallelization, and load balancing. Tang showed animated examples of the model’s scalable and efficient results. LLNL-VIDEO-828969
