The Buffaloes would play host to the University of Illinois for their first ranked matchup of the 1989 season. Coming off wins over Colorado State and Texas and off to a 2-0 start, the game would answer any questions the media had about just how good Colorado could be. Facing off against future 1st overall NFL draft pick Jeff George, the Buffaloes defense would make a statement throughout the contest, holding the quarterback to a mere 99 yards of passing by game's end. Early in the second quarter, CU linebacker Alfred Williams would rack up one of the team's four sacks throughout the game, sending George to the ground in pain while doing so. From then on the quarterback would look like a different player, accounting for three of Illinois four turnovers throughout the game. Meanwhile, the Buffaloes high powered rushing attack would flourish on the offensive side of the ball. Heisman hopeful Eric Bieniemy would build upon his resume, rushing for 100 yards and two touchdowns while also completing one pass for a 48-yard touchdown to wide receiver M.J. Nelson. Senior tailback J.J. Flannigan would also go on to produce on the ground, rushing for 98 yards and two scores on ten carries. The result would be a 38-7 Colorado victory. The game would move the Buffaloes to a No.5 ranking, where they would try to build off their strong 3-0 start to the season and face off against a ranked University of Washington team the next week.
