Clickable timeline and description below, click 'show more' to view. On 6/10/12 a severe thunderstorm passed through Rockaway Township, New Jersey while I was at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall. In addition to a power outage, there was also flooding and wind damage. This storm later brought significant destruction to Dover and Randolph as well. 0:00 Start 1:10 Rain begins 3:30 Storm intensity greatly increases 3:52 Lightning ground strike ~3/4 mile away 4:13 High winds rocking the garbage can 4:31 All the entrance doors blow open as 40+ mph wind whips through the mall 4:45 Visibility drops to 50 yards 5:15 Visibility drops to 30 yards 5:46 A double ground strike ~2 miles away knocks out power to the mall (probably the electrical substation just to the west) 6:30 The jewelry store is boarding up within 45 seconds of losing power... impressive response time 7:07 Sustained high winds have continued to hold the doors open this whole time 8:11 Incredible noise from the rain on the roof of the Atrium 9:00 People running for shelter 9:10 Store lights flickering as the power arcs on and off 9:50 The doors on this side of the mall were forced in and water blew everywhere 10:29 18 minutes after the rain began, the sun is out (but it's still pouring) 10:40 Flooding in the parking lot 11:10 Debris covering the roads 11:25 Mercedes disabled by flood waters 11:42 Corvette disabled by flood waters 11:50 27 minutes after the start, blue skies and sirens fill the air Star Ledger story on the storm - http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012...
