Come join us for a family USA road trip as we showcase our journey driving from North Dakota to Michigan in this travel vlog. We start things off in Alberta, Canada crossing into the province of Saskatchewan and then heading south towards North Dakota. Our border crossing from Canada to USA was an absolute breeze as we were the only person in line at the border and the border control officer was very friendly. After a long day of driving we checked into a cheap motel Super 8 in Williston, North Dakota. The following day we drove the width of North Dakota and entered into the state of Minnesota. The scenery changed from mostly farmland to more trees and lakes. Our final stop on day number two was in Alexandria, Minnesota where we stayed in another cheap motel. After having a couple of very mediocre stays in motels we decided we'd go for an airbnb for our third night of the road trip. On day three we drove across Minnesota and crossed into Wisconsin where we stayed the night in a house in Racine. The following day, our final day of the road trip saw us crossing more states than any other day on this trip. We stared off in Wisconsin and touched down briefly in Illinois and Indiana before spending the rest of our journey in Michigan. We came back into Canada through Sarnia at the border between Michigan and Ontario. This border crossing was much more active than the first one but it still didn't take us long to get through. With just a few hours left we finished off by driving back home to Brampton. Overall, it was a fantastic 14 day road trip and we covered over 9000 kilometres (5600 miles) with all of the sightseeing including for the return trip to Alberta and back home. 🚗✨ USA Road Trip: Ontario to British Columbia (and Back!) via the States | Cross-Border Adventure 🗺️🇺🇸🇨🇦 🚦 Starting the Journey: From Ontario to British Columbia (and Beyond) Hello, everyone! In this video, we embark on an epic road trip—driving all the way west from Ontario to British Columbia, and then choosing a different route back home through the USA for a change of scenery. Instead of repeating the long drive through the Canadian Prairies, we opt for the American highways, aiming for new adventures and experiences on the return journey. It’s a four-day trip, just a few hours shorter than our Canadian route, but filled with fresh sights. 🍩 Final Canadian Pit Stop: Last Tim Hortons & Border Crossing 🇨🇦➡️🇺🇸 We kick off with our last Tim Hortons snacks before leaving Canada, stopping at a picnic area in Saskatchewan to stretch our legs and let the dog run wild. After a long first day of driving—over 10 hours—we cross the border into North Dakota, encountering friendly border security and almost no traffic. Our first American stop: Williston, North Dakota, for a well-earned rest at a Super 8 Motel after a marathon travel day. 🚚 Roadside Encounters: Small-Town America & Rest Stops Along the way, we witness classic North American road scenes, including a house being moved down the highway and plenty of quirky roadside stops. With frequent breaks for the dog, drone flying, and restroom stops, the journey feels less like a race and more like an exploration. 🏨 Motel Nights: The Good, The Bad & The Rustic 🛏️ Our first two nights in the USA are at budget motels—affordable but basic, with dated decor and questionable bathrooms. From North Dakota, we cross into Minnesota, then aim for Alexandria, before setting sights on Racine, Wisconsin for a much-needed upgrade in accommodations. 🚙 Day Two: Blasting Through the Midwest 🌽 Day two is easier, with about seven to eight hours of driving. The route takes us across North Dakota’s vast plains into greener Minnesota, stopping for quick supermarket supplies (deli meats, bread, chips, water, and, of course, candy). The scenery shifts from golden hayfields to more trees and vibrant farmlands. 🥪 Local Culture: Honesty Produce Stands & Small-Town Charm One highlight of Midwest travel is the honor-system farm stands. We find roadside stalls with pumpkins, onions, zucchini, watermelon, peppers, and kale, all sold on trust: you pick what you want, drop your cash or cheque in a box, and continue on your way. This slice of rural Americana is both charming and unique. 🏡 Airbnb Upgrade: Comfort & Space in Racine, Wisconsin Tired of cramped motel rooms, we rent an Airbnb house in Racine, Wisconsin. The space is bigger, more comfortable for everyone—including the dog—and even ends up cheaper than two motel rooms. The house, while older and creaky, is a welcome change with its wooden floors and quirky charms. 🛣️ Final Stretch: Three States in One Day! 🚦 On the last day, we blast through three states: leaving Wisconsin, briefly touching Illinois (with a drive-by of busy Chicago and its endless toll roads), then through Indiana, and most of Michigan. Despite the zoo-like traffic around Chicago, things calm down as we head north, choosing a quieter crossing into Canada via Sarnia rather than Detroit.
