Maryland Department of Natural Resources wants to encourage Marylanders and others to not give up the good fight against invasive bamboo. Bamboo removal is a simple process if done accurately: 1) Get proper gear: a pair of loppers/saws, gloves, and protective eyewear. 2) Have someone to spot you as you cut so as not to have cut bamboo fall on you. 3) Cut the stalks low to the ground, making a flat cut across the top (so as not to leave a sharp stump, which might result in injury). 4) Within one minute of cutting, spray base with herbicide, here we are using glyphosate diluted to 20% solution. For more information on bamboo removal, please reach out to your county or state parks; or look for groups like Weed Warriors, who work to organize groups to remove these types of invasives.Removing invasive species is hard work, but thank you to DNR’s Watershed Restoration Crew for showing us how people can take action to protect Maryland’s plants and ecosystems.
