Excited to share this Percussion Improvisation featuring Magnus Mehta and Sarathy Korwar . "Fractured" is a single release from "What Does it Mean" EP, which releases on March 26th, 2026 - stream or purchase the EP here https://magnusmehta.bandcamp.com/albu... Capturing a raw, improvised dialogue, “What Does it Mean ?” EP brings together two of the UK’s most influential rhythmic voices, Magnus Mehta and Sarathy Korwar “Sarathy and I have been playing together for so long that it feel like I barely have to think when we play - I just start playing, and the music takes care of itself, each time discovering something new” Magnus Mehta The 4 track EP was recorded in a single 3 hour session at Liminal Studio in South East London, Magnus’s private sanctuary for sound, housing a sprawling collection of several hundred rare percussion instruments gathered from across the globe over 30 years. A defining characteristic of the session is the integration of live electronics. Sarathy’s sophisticated electronic setup serves as the central nervous system for the recording, with both musicians’ rigs fed through a chain of stereo delays, granular effects, and harmonizers. This processing transforms the acoustic vibrations of rare instruments into otherworldly soundscapes, blurring the line between the ancient and futuristic. Together, they weave a visceral tapestry moving between percussion traditions and avant-garde exploration. The duo’s choice of instrumentation creates a palette that spans continents and centuries: Magnus plays a Ghanaian Balafon on “Fractured”, adding Pentatonic Bells and Vibraphone on “Absolution," and then chooses the Nigerian Bass Udu, and South Indian Ghatam on “What Does it Mean?” . Tanzanian Ngoma drums form the core of the mysterious “Bridge to Humility” alongside an array of rare shakers and rattles. Sarathy’s plays Pakhawaj Tabla, the South Indian Kanjira, and Jaw harp, whilst continually adjusting his electronics on the fly during takes. Magnus and Sarathy are longtime collaborators having recorded and toured together on multiple projects - most recently on Sarathy’s ‘There is Beauty, There Already” LP - a 40 minute hypnotic meditation of an album that was developed from a 3 day percussion session that the pair worked together on at Real World Studios in 2022. Magnus is a central figure in the percussion world, collaborating with pioneers like Brian Eno and Moses Boyd and contributing to Jacob Collier’s Grammy-winning Djesse Vol.4. His work as a music director and composer includes scoring for Shakespeare’s Globe, while his credits as a session musician include contributing to major film scores such as The Hobbit, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, and the Netflix India production IC814: The Kandahar Hijack Sarathy is visionary producer, composer, and percussionist whose work is redefining the contemporary South Asian soundscape. Recently earning Grammy nominations for co-writing and producing with Anoushka Shankar (Chapter III: We Return to Light), Sarathy has collaborated with luminaries such as Shabaka Hutchings, and Yussef Dayes. Beyond his acclaimed albums, he is a sought-after composer for film and theatre, bringing a unique perspective to documentary scores and contemporary dance.
