Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the Lok Sabha, explaining why the government initially opposed a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. He said SIR falls under the Election Commission, which functions independently, and the House cannot hold a debate where the government would be expected to answer. Shah noted that for two days the Opposition was asked to postpone the discussion, but they insisted. Speaking on electoral reforms, he criticised the Opposition for spreading “one-sided lies” about SIR over four months and referred to Rahul Gandhi’s November 5 press conference claiming 501 votes were cast from a single house in Haryana, which the EC clarified as false. Shah warned that allowing infiltrators to vote could undermine democracy, stating, “Our policy is detect, delete and deport.” Amid his reply, Opposition MPs walked out of the House.
