Avanti West Coast Mainline • Rail trip from south England to Carlisle via London • Pendolino 390

Kit and I take the train from the south of England up to London to catch the West Coast Mainline Avanti service from Euston up to Carlisle to begin our adventure along Hadrian’s Wall. To begin with, we catch the first off-peak Basingstoke service to London Waterloo. From there we dive in to the London tube and catch the Northern Line a few stops north to Euston. Up in the main Euston Station we had a snack and coffee whilst waiting for the departure of the Avanti West Coast service to take us up to Carlisle. We had seat reservations on this train. In Carlisle we had a couple of hours spare before we could check in to our B&B rooms so Kit and I toured the centre and had a late afternoon coffee. Later, we returned to the centre and had fish ‘n chips in a café before enjoying a pint in The Boardroom to toast the beginning of our trip. Tomorrow we head out to pick up the official Hadrian’s Wall trail – and that will be featured in a video out next Friday.
