As governments increasingly rely on complex, data-driven models to shape sustainability policies, this panel examines the promise and pitfalls of such technologies in public decision-making. While data models offer powerful tools for simulating ecological systems and informing forward-looking policies, they also raise pressing questions around transparency, explainability, and political legitimacy. How do these models reshape who influences policy? What assumptions do they carry? And how can we ensure democratic oversight in their use? Speakers: Jurriaan Parie – Co-founder, Algorithm Audit (NGO) Eefje Cuppen – Director, Rathenau Institute Alex Ingrams – Associate Professor, Leiden University 🎙️ Chair: Jiska Engelbert – Director, LDE Centre for BOLD Cities This thought-provoking session explores the balance between the scientific potential of data-driven models and the democratic challenges they introduce. Key themes: The role of models in advancing sustainability policy Legitimacy and accountability in data-driven governance Making models transparent, explainable, and contestable ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Data for Policy here: https://dataforpolicy.org/ Subscribe: / @dataforpolicy Linkedin: / data-for-policy https://x.com/dataforpolicy Sign up for Newsletters: https://dataforpolicy.org/subscribe-f... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- #DataforPolicy #DataforPolicy2025 #AlgorithmicAccountability #SustainabilityPolicy #AIandGovernance #PublicPolicy #ResponsibleAI #DataDrivenDecisionMaking
