A smile and sunglasses inside the cabin before approach and landing at Kindley Field Airport. Some good ariel and a fast landing get us on the island. A quick cab view of the Castle Harbour Hotel from the causeway which is our destination. At the Castle Harbour Hotel, the much-missed limestone landmark of Tuckers Town, we are outside at the front entrance turning circle, then on to the Beach Club in front of the wooden beach house where (in season) I enjoyed a sandwich with chips almost daily as a child. There is now a much larger stone building on this site today. A stop at the sunken cave (I think) in what could pass as underwear - quite the 1960s outfit... and a look around the lovely grounds, most of which have been developed today. A walk along the drive gets us to the original pink gatepost & sign, which was replaced by a castle when Marriot took over the hotel. Front Street, Hamilton is as busy as usual with lots of Mobylettes along the sidewalk. No helmets yet! A white-gloved Bobby is directing traffic from The Birdcage in front of the liner "Franconia" which is docked at Number One Shed. A look north on Queen Street and West on Reid Street. City Hall and a glimpse of the parking lot and one of its long-gone surrounding cottages with its neighbor now a freshly cut development site. A look at the grounds and a stop at the Gibbons fountains (not on today, bowls are drained), unfortunately now replaced with an exciting lawn. The harbor from the top of Burnaby Hill and a stop at The Masonic Hall steps with a new friend. Back at the Castle Harbour Hotel, it's time for some quick sunning on the roof and a look at the courtyard and its multi-level waterfall pool that was a joy to swim in. A stop at Devils Hole to "fish" in the collapsed cave, a much-missed attraction that opened in the 1830s. The mandatory stop at the Aquarium is next to look at the Flamingos, Macaws, and Giant Turtles. Next stop is outside the Bermuda Perfumery in Baily's Bay, the home of Lili Bermuda Perfume - its factory surrounded by gardens. The Bermuda Perfumery lives on today in a historic building in the town of St. Georges and still manufactures Lili Bermuda perfume. I recommend a tour. The tour continues with quick stops at Crystal Caves, the view from the Hotel St. George, Fort St. Catherine (I assume), and a wander around the old Town of St. Georges. Of note are the buildings on Ordinance Island which are long gone, it's much nicer today. Back at the hotel, a walk across the courtyard and pool, it's like the Shining with nobody else seen. A look at the water and planes are landing at The US Kindley Field Base. Back outside of the hotel, a great look at the front and a quick wait on the dock for a Kitson Swizzle Cruise for lunch on an island in the Great Sound. A cruise down North Shore, into Hamilton Harbor, past the Hamilton Princess and Bermudiana Hotels, and as far down to Paget. Lunch is done and it's time to board the Maria, we get a look at a very undeveloped Cambridge Beaches and also Kings Point. Time for a Swizzle party where the guests get the full show of making swizzle in a big pot with the hosts in Bermuda Pink Aprons and Marigold gloves... Always a good time, no musician that day. Back at the front of the Castle Harbour, guests are going on horse and carriage rides. Another stop at Windsor Beach is followed by a great look at the outside of the hotel and its view from a high terrace. A swim in the other pool (I think it was salt water) and a look around the grounds. Archived
