In Eastbourne in 1931, a newsreel crew captured what was described as a first-of-its-kind event: a women’s crown green bowling championship featuring 234 competitors. The full title proudly announced: “Women can Bowl! 234 ladies – many as good, and all certainly as keen as ‘mere man’ – compete in first Women’s tournament.” A local dignitary opened the week with a formal welcome, telling the players: “I hope you’ll go on from strength to strength… and that in a hundred years’ time the ladies’ bowling tournament in Eastbourne may be recognised as the best of its kind in the world.” After polite applause, a woman ceremonially rolled the jack — and the tournament began. The footage shows match play in full swing… while men still act as referees, a small detail that says a lot about sporting culture in the early 1930s. In this episode of Matthew Explores, we use this short but fascinating film to explore women’s sport, social attitudes, and the world of bowls in interwar Britain. #Eastbourne #1931 #WomensSport #Bowls #SussexHistory #BritishHistory #VintageNewsreel #MatthewExplores Eastbourne 1931 women can bowl women’s bowls tournament 1931 crown green bowling history women in sport interwar Britain Eastbourne East Sussex history 1930s British newsreel women’s sport history UK lawn bowls England history Matthew Explores Eastbourne
