Bunions are not hereditary. Bones and joints change position and shapes based on the forces imposed on them over time. The requirements to move our body relative to gravity are always consistent: we need to be able to absorb force (forces of our body relative to gravity), and we need to be able to produce force to overcome the weight of our body to move and complete desired tasks (walking/running/picking things up/etc.) Force absorption is translated in our bodies through external rotation. Force production is translated in our bodies through internal rotation. All dynamic and healthy human movement is mainly expressed through rotation. When we begin to lose the ability to rotate freely through individual joints, we lose the capacity to move as nature intended. But, because the requirements remain the same (you need to rotate somewhere to move), your brain will find a way to move you through space. And, the big toe is a major area where we can begin to drive excessive rotation into the ground (when we’ve lost it at the hip/knee/ankle/trunk); and, over time, this can lead to those uneven forces levying changes to the shapes of the bones. And now, we have bunions. Because bunions are a systems issue and not just a local issue (the locality of the issue is just a symptom - you need to zoom out to understand how it first occurred), you need to treat the system and restore mechanics if you want to fix the local issue. Drop us a comment below if you’ve ever been told that bunions are hereditary! Hopefully now you know - they’re not. #mobility #patient #bunions #feet #toes #legs #movement #bones
