It was the end of a decade and the beginning of a brand-new era in music. It was the year the Beatles said goodbye, and a new wave of singer-songwriters took center stage... and rock, soul, and pop collided in revolutionary ways. So many classics with incredible stories and legendary guests, from No Sugar Tonight, a song inspired by Randy Bachman witnessing a wife cussing out her husband in public with a funny comeback. He turned into a #1 hit. And Bridge Over Troubled Water, a song that famous songwriter Paul Simon forced his less famous singing partner Art Garfunkel to do. But Paul was jealous and LIVID when it became their biggest hit. Another, Free's All Right Now was written on the fly before a gig, and it went over so well that the audience made the band play it again. And Eric Burdon & War's Spill the Wine, a song that most people don’t realize is about an O-R-G-Y, but we sing it all the time. It was the year we lost Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin from drug-related deaths, and The Beatles, the biggest band of all time, effectively died. It was that kind of drama that fueled one of the most fascinating years in music. 1970..The headlines were not always groovy, but the songs from that year were incredible. Here we go with the countdown of the Top 10 Songs of 1970, kicking it off with Eric Burdon & War at #10 with “Spill the Wine:” "Spill the Wine" was the first single from Eric Burdon and the band War, dropping back in May of 1970. With one of the great misheard lyrics in history, the song was very misunderstood… and good thing it was because that’s how it got past the censors and became a hit. Here’s what Eric Burdon told me about it. Wow, a massive spoken word hit about an O-R-G-Y. The song rallied all the way to #3 on the Hot 100, and in Canada. It placed #5 in Canada, and #2 in Australia. At #9 on our Top 10 Songs of 1970, it’s one of the greatest double a side single of the time with a band that stepped in where the Betrays left off… It’s the double-A-sided combo of “Travelin’ Band” and “Who’ll Stop the Rain” from Creedence Clearwater Revival. In 1970, Creedence Clearwater Revival was on fire, and John Fogerty wrote a blistering, high-octane rocker called “Travelin’ Band.” Inspired by the nonstop grind of life on the road, the song captured the raw energy and chaos of touring life with roaring guitars and a full-throttle vocal from Fogerty, who could deliver like few others. It found its home on the band's Cosmo’s Factory album—a record packed with hits. When “Travelin’ Band” was released as a single, paired with the reflective “Who’ll Stop the Rain” on the B-side, it became one of three powerful double-sided singles from the album to crash into the U.S. Top Five. It shot up the charts and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100. But as big as it was, it couldn’t quite knock Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” from the #1 spot
