Desperado was the first song the Eagles actually wrote together and it ended up being the last song they ever played tougher before they broke up. And to think that this complex classic was written by Don Henley when he was only 17 years old and it became a true classic for a band that had at least a dozen of them from Hotel California to Take it Easy but this became their crem de la crem. it became an all time standard, and one of the most covered songs ever. but it missed the charts entirely. but the song’s history is just as profound. From a starting a fire at the photo shoot for the record, where the fire department had to come save them to the band having zero budget to record it… In fact he band could only afford two takes on the song so the singer had to be perfect to nail a difficult vocal and with a renowned orchestra playing behind him. No pressure at all right? Even though the song wasn’t a hit, it was including on a greatest hits album and it is the major reason why that album has sold over 40 million copies… The story is next. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers Craig M, James Smith, Ardashir Lea, j lee, Michael Bedenbaugh ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check out my Hand Picked Selection Below Professor's Store Van Halen OU812 Vinyl Album https://amzn.to/3tLsII2 The 80s Collection https://amzn.to/3mAekOq 100 Best Selling Albums https://amzn.to/3h3qZX9 Ultimate History of 80s Teen Movie https://amzn.to/3ifjdKQ 80s to 90s VHS Video Cover Art https://amzn.to/2QXzmIX Totally Awesome 80s A Lexicon https://amzn.to/3h4ilrk Best In Ear Headphones (I Use These Every Day) https://amzn.to/2ZcTlIl ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out The Professor of Rock Merch Store -http://bit.ly/ProfessorMerch ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Check Out Patron Benefits http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Help out the Channel by purchasing your albums through our links! So it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads… songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes we have covered Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot, Cat’s in the Cradle by Harry Chapin, and Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. But today we are breaking down a timeless classic from a band who really, has half a dozen New Standards. The band is the Eagles, or just ‘Eagles’ if you want to get technical. And the song? Desperado from the band’s sophomore LP of the same name It’s a classic rock staple for sure… But it didn’t start out that way. Going back for a brief primer, the Eagles were clear front-runners in that 1970s California sound. Leaders of a burgeoning country-rock movement, the band was originally made up of guitarists Glenn Frey and Bernie Leadon, bassist Randy Meisner, and drummer Don Henley. Previously, Frey had played with Bob Seger and JD Souther, Leadon with The Flying Burrito Brothers and Dillard Clark, Meisner with Poco and Ricky Nelson, and Henley with Shiloh. So by the time they formed the Eagles, these musicians were already an accomplished group. And actually before forming the Eagles, they played together as Linda Ronstadt’s back up band for her 1972 self-titled album. But Henley and Frey were driven to take things to the next level. So they stepped out of Ronstadt’s shadow and recruited Meisner and Leadon to join them. Together the foursome signed a deal with David Geffen’s Asylum label and got to work recording their self-titled record in London. Led by famed producer Glyn Johns, the Eagles took flight in the studio, creating a groundbreaking mix country-rock songs. ‘Eagles’ the album, would ultimately go platinum and feature three US Top 25 singles.
