Jordan was never originally part of the plan. We added it on as an afterthought to our Egypt trip and it ended up being one of the best decisions we’ve made. We absolutely loved it. The people were welcoming, the pace felt calmer, and there was far more to see and do than we expected. It may now sit at the very top of the places we have visited and would confidently recommend to others. Day 0 - Arrival in Amman We landed into Amman with our Jordan Pass organised, which meant no issues with visas and straight through the airport. The Jordan Pass gives you hassle-free access to heaps of attractions across the country and also includes your visa fees. We were picked up by a hotel-organised driver and had a longer-than-expected drive into the city. We stayed at Rafi Hotel in Amman - a simple, central base close to many key sites (website link below). Day 1 - Exploring Amman We woke to cold rain but headed out to visit the Roman Amphitheatre, which was one of our free entries with our Jordan Pass. As we arrived, the rain started to clear thankfully. There was a confusing parade and police presence at the front, but once it cleared we enjoyed the site. Except for Austin getting a bit nervous after getting to the top and discovering how steep it was. We then walked to Hashem Restaurant for lunch, a lively local experience. Afterward, we climbed up to the Amman Citadel for sweeping city views and plenty of ruins for the kids to explore. Day 2 - Amman to Petra We took a taxi to the airport to pick up our rental car and drove down to Petra. Driving in Jordan felt easy overall, apart from a few moments without mobile reception and odd suggestions from Waze. A highlight of the day was a stop at Karak Castle, which we all wished we had more time to explore. Entry here was also covered by our Jordan Pass. We arrived in Petra with snow on the roadside and temperatures much colder than expected. We stayed at Petra Aretas Hotel. Day 3 - Petra Up at 6.30am to beat the crowds into Petra by 7.30am. We walked nearly 20km exploring the ancient city, from the Siq to the iconic Treasury, up the 800+ steps to the Monastery, and beyond to viewpoints overlooking the Palestine. The kids loved every minute and barely complained, which tells you how special this place is. Petra is incredible on its own, and exploring early was well worth it. We only wish we'd stayed more than the one day! Day 4 - Dead Sea We drove through rugged, scenic mountain roads to reach the Dead Sea and checked into Mövenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea (website link below). We made it in time for an afternoon chocolate buffet tea before heading down to float in the salty water. The kids had mixed reactions, and only Jason actually managed to stay afloat, but it was a memorable experience. Later we relaxed in the heated pools and enjoyed a fantastic buffet dinner. Day 5 - Baptism Site and Return Our final full day included a visit to the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ on the Jordan River. This spot requires a guide due to its proximity to a militarised area, and our guide provided lots of interesting context. We then drove back to Amman for a final evening out before flying home the next day. Jordan was incredible and exceeded all of our expectations. We could easily have spent a lot more time there. Our number one recommendation for any future travellers is the Jordan Pass. It simplifies visas and includes entry to many major sites you’ll want to see (plus some you might not have otherwise).
