This documentary footage was recorded in 1996 by the team of IGNCA (Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts), New Delhi, and captures a rare and authentic glimpse of traditional Gaddi cultural life. In this video, Gaddi women (Gaddans) are seen singing “गाली” and other traditional folk songs that were commonly performed during marriage ceremonies, community gatherings, and social occasions. In the traditional Gaddi context, “गाली” does not carry the negative or abusive meaning associated with the word today. Instead, it was used playfully and sincerely, as a form of entertainment, humor, and social bonding. These songs were an important part of Gaddi cultural heritage, especially during the long winter months, when agricultural and pastoral work was minimal. Music, storytelling, and folk performances became meaningful ways for the community to pass time, express emotions, and strengthen social ties. Sadly, many of these traditions are now fading or almost extinct, and the younger generation is often unfamiliar with their cultural significance and original meaning. The sole motive behind sharing this video is to preserve, document, and spread awareness of this invaluable cultural heritage — not only for the world to see, but especially for the young generation of the Gaddi tribe, so they can reconnect with their roots and cultural identity. This video stands as a historical and cultural record, honoring the voices, traditions, and lived experiences of an earlier generation. 📝 About This Video This video includes material licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution–NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).
