In this video we look at how you can increase your sprint speed by considering stride length and stride rate. Sprinting is all about converting vertical velocity on foot-strike to horizontal velocity and in this respect the hips play a key role. You will se various relevant drills in this video. Particularly for a young athlete it is vital to develop an optimised sprinting technique. Failure to do so will prevent you reaching maximum velocity. In my experience it is better to focus on the development of good technique than focussing on stride rate in particular. Once technical mastery has been achieved it may then be an option. However, more gains are going to be made from stride length gains initially and this comes from improved mechanics and power produced via those mechanics. The harder you strike the track the greater the reaction and therefore increased stride length. As the athlete gets older then there may be a need to really asses whether they are using their leg length and creating sufficient frequency i.e. to really understand frequency and stride length and their interplay with the athlete. In the video you will see some "piston" drills where the focus is on driving the foot into the track either repeated on one leg every 1,2 or 3 steps of every 2 steps which creates an alternate leg drive. You'll also see some of the running practises which we use to also improve speed - such as off bend runs and sprint-float-sprints. Both these options can improve speed. The former has more of an effect potentially on stride length and the latter frequency.
