Education in Nigeria: ‘Increasing Tuition Fees Now Is Unfair And Insensitive’ | VSA | 24-07-23

Student unions in Nigeria have threatened widespread demonstrations in response to recent tuition increases at various public universities. These colleges recently announced a major hike in the cost of tuition of at least 100%. The federal government has also instituted additional first-term fees for high school pupils enrolled in federal universities, which has added to the worry. The cost of living has already grown as a result of rising fuel prices, which coincides with this increase in fees. The prospective effects of these fee increases on their life have deeply concerned both students and parents, who are concerned about possible school dropouts owing to financial difficulties. The Nigerian House of Representatives took action in reaction to the outrage and instructed the National Universities Commission to halt the introduction of the new fees in federal universities while inquiries are made. The House has also directed the Federal Ministry of Education to study the new system for charging tuition at Federal Government Colleges and switch back to the old system.
