In those early years, most games took place in natural bush settings using basic equipment, with simple “capture the flag” objectives shaping how people played. Growth was slow initially because paintball markers were legally considered firearms, resulting in strict and often inconsistent rules across different states. As regulations gradually became clearer and more streamlined, more paintball fields opened and organised events began to appear, allowing the sport to build momentum nationwide. As the sport evolved globally, Australian players embraced a newer, faster, and more spectator-friendly format known as speedball. Unlike traditional bushball, speedball is played on a compact, open field filled with inflatable bunkers laid out in a mirrored design. This change made gameplay quicker, more tactical, and easier to officiate and film, paving the way for proper tournament-style competition. By the 1990s and early 2000s, Australia was regularly hosting state tournaments and notable series such as the Victorian Masters, helping establish a dedicated competitive scene supported by ambitious teams and growing sponsorship. Today, tournament paintball in Australia is built around structured leagues and national events. At the forefront is the Australian Super7s Paintball Series, introduced in the mid-2000s and now recognised as the country’s leading competitive league. Based at Action Paintball Games near Sydney, Super7s features a fast-paced 7-player speedball format and draws teams from across Australia and overseas. Supporting this national platform are local clubs, smaller tournaments, and state-run organisations that help bring in new players and keep the community active. What started as casual skirmishes in the bush has grown into a highly strategic, athletic, and well-organised sport with a passionate and rapidly expanding following across Australia.
