Kuppuswamy or Swami Sivananda Saraswati (1887 - 1963), was a renowned Hindu spiritual leader, guru, writer and master of Yoga and Vedanta. Sivananda began his professional life as a doctor, until he realized that more than anything, people needed correct knowledge; he then adopted the dissemination of this knowledge as his mission. Renouncing a medical career, Sivananda entered the monastic life as a disciple of the master Vishwananda Saraswati. Leading a life devoted to the study and practice of Vedanta, Swami Sivananda spent most of his time absorbed in hours of meditation, intense study and vigorous practice of Hatha Yoga. Although immersed in his own path of Self-realization, Sivananda never stopped attending to people in need of medical care, and said he saw only the immortal form of the Self in each of those people. Sivananda was known for his practical and inclusive approach to Yoga, emphasizing the importance of simplicity, charity, and the practice of a daily routine of spiritual exercises (sadhana) as the direct means to attaining Self-realization, which could include meditation, chanting of mantras, reading of sacred texts, and selfless service. In 1932 Sivananda established the Sivanandashram. In 1936 he founded “The Divine Life Society.” And in 1948 the Vedanta-Forest Academy. At the same time, Sivananda wrote many books on spirituality, Yoga, health, and philosophy. In this way, his teachings spread internationally, becoming a great disseminator of Vedic knowledge.
