John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the main international airport serving New York City, United States. It’s one of the busiest and most important gateways for global travel in North America. Location and basics Official name: John F. Kennedy International Airport (IATA code JFK). Located in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, New York. About 26 km (16 miles) southeast of Manhattan. Operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Size and traffic The airport handles tens of millions of passengers annually and ranks among the busiest in the United States by international passenger traffic. It has four runways and a large central terminal area. Terminals JFK currently has several active terminals where passengers check in and board flights: Terminal 1 – International flights (being redeveloped and expanded). Terminal 4 – Major international terminal with wide airline coverage. Terminal 5 – JetBlue’s base and some international partners. Terminal 7 – International flights including some British Airways and partner carriers. Terminal 8 – American Airlines hub with domestic and international service. (Terminals 2 and 6 have been closed or demolished as part of redevelopment.) Getting to and from the airport AirTrain JFK: A free people mover inside the airport connects all terminals and links to the NYC subway and the Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica and Howard Beach stations. Subways and trains: You can transfer from the AirTrain to subway lines (A, E, J, Z) or the LIRR to reach Manhattan and beyond. Taxis and rideshare: Flat-rate taxi fares to Manhattan are common, and services like Uber and Lyft pick up at designated zones. Buses and shuttles: Express buses and private shuttles link JFK with central NYC locations. Travel tips Because it’s a major international hub, arriving early for check-in and security is a good idea. Inter-terminal transfers often involve the AirTrain rather than walking. Ongoing redevelopment, including a new Terminal 1 and expanded facilities, aims to improve the passenger experience in the coming years.
