Giuseppe Verdi's La Forza del Destino (The Force of Destiny) Overture is one of his most powerful and popular concert pieces-an operatic overture that encapsulates the drama, tension, and passion of the opera. Although the opera was composed in 1862, this overture was added when it was revised in 1869. La Forza del Destino is a sprawling, tragic opera of fate, family, and fatal coincidence. The story revolves around Leonora and Alvaro, lovers torn apart by a chain of violent misunderstandings and the unyielding forces of fate. Verdi revised the opera significantly after its lukewarm premiere in St. Petersburg, and with the 1869 version-premiered at La Scala in Milan-came the new overture, which quickly became a concert favorite on its own. The overture opens ominously with the now-famous Fate motif: three unison brass chords, like a great hand knocking at the door. This is followed by the restless primary theme of the overture and a series of contrasting episodes. But this stern and imposing gesture returns, symbolizing the inescapable grip of destiny.
