ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー The trip to Aomori, Okutsugaru & Tappizaki was the best ever—with gourmet food, amazing scenery, and unbeatable value! 【Sightseeing・Hidden Gem】okutsugaru aomori, japan ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー Presented by: Aomori Prefecture This time, I’m sharing a trip to a place in Aomori that you should visit at least once in your life—Okutsugaru and the hidden wonder of Tappizaki! The breathtaking food and scenery made this journey one of my top domestic travel experiences. Tappizaki is located at the northernmost point of the Tsugaru Peninsula in Aomori, offering a spectacular view of the Tsugaru Strait. The central town of this area, Sotogahama, has a population of about 5,000. ※Population estimates (2024–2025) vary between 4,637 and 5,096 depending on the source. Historically, this area served as a key transit point between Honshu and Hokkaido and thrived as a maritime trade hub. Tappizaki was considered a difficult passage for sailors, and during the Edo period, the Tsugaru clan established a lookout post here. Ferries to Hokkaido began in the Meiji era, and in the Showa era, the Seikan Tunnel—Japan’s longest—was constructed. The Tappizaki Seikan Tunnel Museum now preserves valuable documents about the tunnel’s construction. Tappizaki is also known as the “Cape of Wind.” In winter, wind speeds can exceed 30 meters per second. This is why the area is home to a rare “Staircase National Highway,” which remains a popular tourist attraction today. ※From Amazing AOMORI: “There are various theories why it became a national road, but due to a 70-meter elevation difference and tightly packed houses, the stairway section was never redeveloped.” Local cuisine centers around fresh seafood. Tuna from the Tsugaru Strait is exceptional, and scallops and squid are local specialties, often served grilled or as sashimi. The regional dish “jappa-jiru,” a warm miso soup made with fish bones, is perfect for the cold season. You can access the area via Wan-Taku shared taxis (fixed or free route) from Okutsugaru-Imabetsu Station. I used both during my trip and found them extremely convenient. Wan-Taku is a shared taxi service operating in the Tsugaru region of Aomori Prefecture. Fare: 500 yen per ride for junior high students and older, regardless of distance. 300 yen for children, disabled persons, seniors over 75, former drivers, JR ticket holders (north of Kanita), and My Number card holders residing in Imabetsu or Sotogahama. Wan-Taku Free Route is available in designated areas. Reservations required. Web reservations available 24/7 from 1 week to the day before your ride. Phone bookings available from 8:00–20:00, up to 60 minutes before boarding. Payment methods include cash, Suica IC card, credit cards, and QR payments. This is a hidden travel spot every adult should visit at least once in their life!
