Grandmaster/Si Gung Ip Chee Keung - Jeung Mun Yan. Do not use "gatekeeper" . This video was filmed in 2012 during a late evening private training session with Si Gung Ip Chee Keung at Sifu Wong Shun Yau’s restaurant in London. Anyone who has had experience of meeting their Sifu, after a restaurant closes, for late night training, knows what a rare, trusted and learning experience this is. We share this video as it is a beautiful execution of Saam Bo Gin in an environment that was genuine, meaningful, personal and focussed on teaching. We could talk about the what and why this is a wonderful demonstration of Saam Bo Gin and we could further explain Saam Bo Gin (which we will in the future). However, this is post about the “Jeung Mun Yan” - Si Gung Ip Chee Keung. Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung is the son and direct inheritor of Grandmaster Ip Shui of Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis Kung Fu. He represents the direct continuation of the Chow Gar lineage preserving one of the rarest Hakka family martial arts in the world. Trained intensively from childhood under his father, Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung was fully immersed into the Chow Gar system, its training methods, concepts, internal development, medicine and conditioning methods. In 1974, he traveled to the United Kingdom, where his teaching became instrumental in spreading Chow Gar across Europe and the West, laying the foundations for its modern global presence. It was during this time that one of his first students was the current and only official UK Representative, Sifu Paul Whitrod. Before the passing of his father, Grandmaster Ip Shui, the mantle of Head of the System was formally entrusted to Ip Chee Keung in 2002 by his father. Beyond martial arts, Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung is also deeply versed in traditional Chinese medicine and Dit Da healing, maintaining clinical practice in Hong Kong. He has devoted his life to preserving, refining, and safeguarding the authentic teachings of Chow Gar. Today, Grandmaster Ip Chee Keung stands as the recognized authority of Chow Gar Southern Praying Mantis. He is the known internally as the only official Si Gung / Head of the system but also as his official title, Jeung Mun Yan. The term “Gatekeeper” is a more recent, newly used label adopted for marketing purposes and to support a narrative that is now out of date as well as historically inaccurate. The modern English term “gatekeeper” does not adequately convey this responsibility, authority, or cultural depth and fails to reflect the historical significance embedded within the traditional title. For accuracy, respect, and preservation of cultural integrity, Jeung Mun Yan 掌門人 remains the correct and appropriate designation. In traditional Chinese martial arts, the correct and universally recognised title is 掌門人 (Jeung Mun Yan) — the person who holds the gate. The character 掌 means to hold, control, or be in charge of, denoting the recognised head of a system who inherits, leads, and represents the lineage. By contrast, a recently derecognised association consistently uses the both the miisuse and mistranslation of “gatekeeper” as "守門人" is both wrong and humiliating. 守門人 (Sau Mun Yan) literally translates to doorman or gate guard, someone who simply watches or guards a door. This term has never been used traditionally to describe the head of a kung fu system and fundamentally alters the intended meaning. Its modern usage reflects a marketing construct rather than an authentic or historically grounded martial arts title. It stands to reason that, in the same way we correctly use traditional terms such as Sifu and Si Gung rather than their simplified English equivalents, 掌門人 (Jeung Mun Yan) is the culturally and historically correct title. This term carries deep lineage meaning, signifying the one who holds, leads and represents the system. Please like, comment, share and tag us. Ok ok ok, if you’ve read this far, notice how in Saam Bo Gin, there is no foot stomping, no excessive breathing and excessive movement, no forced power to “look” strong. There is control, there is an internal breathing method. There are infinite lessons in what you don’t see. #chowgar #icgpma #southernprayingmantis #kungfu
