(31 Jan 2000) Voice and effects VOICED BY: Philippa Meagher General Augusto Pinochet has come another step closer to being sent home to Chile, after Belgium and six human rights groups lost a crucial High Court battle to block his release. VOICE-OVER: 0.02 Angry protesters demonstrated outside Britain's highest court decrying atrocities committed during General Augusto Pinochet's rule. It was a last ditch protest, made as the judge ruled on their legal challenge Belgium, and six human rights groups, want to review Pinochet's medical records before a final decision is made on whether he can return to Chile. 0.21 An independent medical team has found Pinochet unfit to stand trial and Britain's Home Secretary is thinking of allowing the 84-year-old to return home. SUPER CAPTION: Berenice Dockemdorff, relative of victim 1.00 Amnesty International is considering whether to renew its legal challenge, while Belgium has already announced it plans to appeal the ruling. 1.08 SOUNDBITE: (English) "Belgium has already decided so there will be hearing whatever happens next Monday, subject to sorting out the Senator Pinochet's stay in Britain and the likelihood that he will be kept here until the divisional court hearing." SUPER CAPTION: Geoffrey Bindman, Amnesty International lawyer 1.29 Pinochet's lawyers say while the appeal means a final decision on whether their client can return to Chile will be further delayed, the former dictator is another step closer to returning home.
