As far back as the 1970s, we here in Texas have made a policy choice that in order for citizens to actively participate in their government, they must have two things. First of all, they must have access to the data upon which government leaders are using to make decisions. The second thing they need to have is access to the decision making process. It's not enough in a democracy for citizens to just be told what their government is doing or what has been done. They have a right to understand how the government got to that point, what choices were considered, and why the government is doing the things that it is doing. in order to effectuate that level of citizen engagement, we here in Texas have the Texas public Information Act and the Texas Open Meetings Act. ------ NOTICE This video was originally produced in 2023.
