Make Your Saxophone Playing More Expressive Have you ever played a phrase that was technically correct… but still felt flat, lifeless, or unexpressive? This is one of the biggest frustrations I see in sax players — and it has nothing to do with knowing more notes or learning more licks. In this video, I break down how to consciously add expression to your phrases, step by step, starting from a simple II-V-I idea. We begin by making sure the phrase is solid: • even sound • round tone • rhythmic precision • no unconscious articulation Then, layer by layer, I show how expression is added intentionally: • shaping phrases with airflow and dynamics • using tonguing as an expressive tool, not a reflex • placing articulation consciously (including ghost tonguing) • adding vibrato only when the foundation is solid • using bends and scoops tastefully • adapting the same phrase to different tempos and contexts (ballad, medium, fast) The key idea is this: Expression doesn’t come from doing more — it comes from controlling what you already play. When your fingers, sound, and air are even, everything you add on top becomes musical instead of random. This is how phrases start to speak. Let me know in the comments which aspect of expression you struggle with most — airflow, articulation, or phrasing. ⸻ This approach to phrasing and expression is something we explore much more deeply inside IMC (Improv Mastery Circle). IMC is a guided environment where we focus on sound, rhythm, articulation, and long-term musical development — helping players turn clean technique into expressive, confident improvisation over time.
