People tend to dichotomize books into fiction and nonfiction, which I do not think is a particularly useful distinction except in certain cases such as nonfiction books being more likely to have footnotes and referencing antecedents. Idries Shah divided books into three categories based on the function calling to inform, to entertain, and to instruct, which I think makes more sense and might be a better starting point.
