In this first episode of a four-part Double Take video miniseries on depression from the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Scott-Vernaglia recounts her personal experiences with depression. She and Drs. Sanacora, Crawford, Teel, and Anderson discuss the prevalence of depression and the need to empower the primary care physician to screen for, diagnose, and address suicidality. Available therapies for treatment-resistant depression are briefly introduced and will be explored in greater depth in episode 2 of the miniseries. For further reading, the following articles, referenced in the video, are available on the Journal’s website: Treatment-Resistant Depression in Older Adults (Steffens, in the February 15, 2024, issue); Ketamine versus ECT for Nonpsychotic Treatment-Resistant Major Depression (Anand et al., in the June 22, 2023, issue); and Electroconvulsive Therapy (Espinoza and Kellner, in the February 17, 2022, issue). The New England Journal of Medicine is the world’s leading general medical journal.
