On today's adventure through the looking glass, we are on the grand slam lighthouse tour from Bar Harbor Maine ( ). We have stopped in Lebec, Maine to visit at the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. It is the only lighthouse in the United States. with a distinctive red and white horizonal stripes designed to make it highly visible against the dark pine trees and snow. It has 8 red strips and 7 white strips. Each strip is 25 inches wide. It sits at the eastern most tip of the United States mainland making it the first lighthouse in the country to see the sunrise. The tower still uses its original 1858 third-order Fresnel lens which is one of only 8 remaining in use on the Main Coast. The name comes from the Passamaquoddy Native American word for fertile and beautiful place making it the picturesque lighthouse is frequently depicted on calendars and posters. It was featured on a 25-cent postal stamp in 1990. The current brick tower is actually the second version built to replace its earlier rumble masonry tower from 1831. The lighthouse was authorized by President Thomas Jefferson in 1806. In 1820 one of the nation's first fog bell was received. The area is notoriously foggy, experiencing heavy fog for roughly 60 days a year. This leading to a local joke that the fog is manufactured here. In 1869 a fog whistle was installed to replace the fog bells. The signal was described as similar to the blast of a steam locomotive. Located at Quoddy Head State Park, visitors can explore the grounds and visit the museum in the keeper's house. This lighthouse participates in the United States Lighthouse Society Passport Program. There are 50 steps to the top.The light is 83 feet above sea level and can be seen for 18 nautical miles. It gives two white flashes every 15 seconds.
