The speaker, an engineer, joined the book publishing industry as an editor. Despite the perception that reading is dying in India, the speaker believes that the Indian reader is not an endangered breed. The reason for the low book sales in India compared to the US is the socio-economic conditions of the average Indian student, who sees education as a means of survival rather than an opportunity for cultural enrichment. However, as India continues to develop economically and education becomes more accessible, the speaker believes that more people will choose to read books. The speaker's own experience of hiding novels from their parents and ultimately choosing to pursue a career in publishing reflects their belief in the future of reading in India. Shreya Punj is a content creator and book publishing consultant. As a commissioning editor, she published many bestselling authors at Penguin Random House India and HarperCollins Publishers. She has over a decade of work experience in Indian publishing. She’s made several pivots in her career. An engineer, she started her career as a reporter at Mint. She’s also worked in the Indian startup ecosystem in senior leadership roles. Shreya also runs The Editor Recommends on Instagram, where she wants to make India pick up the book and make the publishing industry more accessible to people. The account has over 100k followers. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
