Lakshmikutty Amma is a Padma Shri awardee (2018) and traditional tribal healer from the Kani tribe of Kerala, India. Living in Kallar near Thiruvananthapuram, she has spent decades practising indigenous forest-based medicine and traditional tribal healing practices. Known locally as Vanamuthassi — meaning “Grandmother of the Forest” — she is widely recognised as a poison healer, particularly for her traditional snakebite treatment using medicinal plants. Lakshmikutty Amma remembers the uses of more than 500 medicinal plants, knowledge preserved entirely through oral tradition within the Kani tribal community. Her remedies are prepared using traditional herbal medicine and indigenous healing practices passed down through generations. During our visit to her home in Kallar, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, she shared stories from her life, recited poetry rooted in tribal folklore, and showed us the medicinal plants growing in her courtyard. Her work represents one of the living examples of indigenous medicine, tribal healing practices, medicinal plant knowledge, and traditional knowledge systems in India. 📍 Location: Kallar, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. #LakshmikuttyAmma #PadmaShri #KaniTribe #IndigenousKnowledge #TraditionalMedicine #MedicinalPlants #KeralaIndia #peopleofindia #thiruvananthapuram
