August 17 (26th Mordad in the Iranian calendar) is observed in Iran as the Day of the Return of the "Azadegan"(the freed sons of the Nation) to their homeland. On this day in 1990, the first group of Iranian captives from the Iraq-imposed war came back after long and painful years of imprisonment. Yet the people of Iran never called them “prisoners.” Instead, they honored them with the name Azadegan, “the free-spirited,” in order to recognize their unbroken dignity and inner strength—a reminder that even an eagle, though caged, never ceases to dream of the sky. To commemorate this day and to keep alive the memory of the "Azadegan"(the free-spirited People) the Culture House of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi, in coordination with the IRIB office, held a conversation with Dr. Nasira Sharma—a distinguished Indian Novelist, translator, and journalist who once visited the camps and interviewed Iranian captives during those difficult years.
