Supporting Positive Disintegration in Gifted and Neurocomplex Adults — Rachel Fell

Supporting Positive Disintegration in Gifted and Neurocomplex Adults by Rachel Fell 2024 Dabrowski Congress The lifelong journey of human development and maturation—encompassing physical, emotional, mental, and existential facets—is often overlooked and undervalued by society, especially in adults. Capitalist cultural overtones of competition, material achievement, and “external-only” focus put extreme pressure on the potential for authentic human development. Additionally, the perpetual tug-of-war between digital and physical realities further distorts self-concept, creating the conditions to “see the self as a commodity” in new and confusing ways. These complex, intersectional influences hinder both individual and collective engagement with our inner worlds and lifelong development, impeding meaningful evolution and maturation of the psyche and personality. This pressure is often seen, felt, and intensified in gifted individuals, as their innate capacities can become the unwitting “target” of these influences. The Theory of Positive Disintegration provides an incredible, alternative lens through which we can see and normalize the nuanced dynamics of unseen maturation, challenging conventional notions of growth as “up and to the right” and external only. In this presentation, we will explore how the Theory provides a useful, high-level frame to explore the complex intersectionality of these internalized pressures in gifted adults. We will unpack how the theory can help us/our clients 1) reclaim inner authority, 2) acknowledge and balance inner and outer orientations, and 3) reframe neurodivergence/giftedness and the mind-body connection.
