In this video, I describe research into patterns of discussion regarding the Kavanaugh nomination by state legislators in five states on the social media platform Twitter. Social media is an important venue for study of political communication because of its permanence and systematically recorded form, and because social media communication by politicians have become especially salient in recent years. Twitter is a particularly appropriate choice for study because source references and social relationships are well-marked on the platform and because Twitter posts are public by default, largely negating privacy concerns. State legislators are interesting to study in this case as elected politicians associated with national political parties, yet also free from the constraint of having to vote on the nomination. In this sense, they occupy a curious middle ground between federal politicians and members of the unelected public. They are also a relatively small number of individuals within firmly specified boundaries of membership. These features allow for the study of network ties within entire populations and the manual examination of member communications. This study thereby avoids the problem of missing data in social networks and the difficulty of identifying posts on a controversial subject (Darwish, 2018) both automatically and correctly.
