Black Heath

Fried Herman reconstructed old dances as well as wrote her own; one of my favorites being the dance Black Heath, whose instructions she took from Walsh 1718 and published in her book Choice Morsels. This demonstration video for the 2018 New York Playford Ball shows some of the pleasures of the choreography: the glance at partner while leading through and just before the cast (the cast-goodbye), the readiness of the inactives to join in the lead through, the change of texture from one move to another, and the thorough sociality of the figures. Fried directs the use of a skip change of step in the ½ figure 8 up for the 1s; we chose to continue that stepping in the dance-around neighbor (man below, woman up), breaking into a dance walk for the final 2-hand turn.
