The Lantern Festival marks the end of CNY. The sesame filling Mom bought was too sweet, so I dug up some matcha powder from the fridge and mixed it .I kneaded the glutinous rice flour into a dough, broke off a piece, flattened it into a circle, stuffed in the filling, wrapped it tight, and rolled it into a ball. When I was a kid, after New Year’s Eve dinner, we’d watch the CNY Gala while making tangyuan—trying to finish them in time to eat at midnight when the clock struck 12. That’s when I learned how to make it. If Women’s Day falls on a workday, we get a half-day off. This year it was on a Sunday, so I headed to the city center in the afternoon to catch a screening of a stage play documentary. Inter Alia is Susie Miller’s follow-up to Prima Facie. But I think it’s a bit underwhelming. The sharp edge of Prima Facie didn’t carry over to this new one—the way it shows women’s identity split in the family is just too soft, Not exactly a punchy, powerful piece. 📍 Keichaya (敬茶屋) 7 Liuyun 3rd St (next to Baohetang) My go-to matcha dessert spot! For Women’s Day, I treated myself to their winter special: chestnut & kumquat cake. It had: • Xinhui kumquat ganache • Low-sugar chestnut puree • Kumquat pulp & tangerine custard • Chestnut bits + roasted tea chantilly cream • Premium roasted tea cake The tea, chestnut, and citrus flavors were perfectly balanced. The rich tea taste layered with the kumquat custard and chestnut crunch—loved it! The stray cat on the second floor was adopted by the owner this winter. It’s grown so much now, all playful and cute. The day after Women’s Day, I ate with friends. We three go back over 10 years—met at work. One got married, had a kid, then divorced; one’s married with a kid; one’s still single… One of ’em started a small event company, so when there’s a project, we team up again, then grab dinner after. The new Chaoshan beef hot pot we picked was so good—way better meat than other places I’ve tried. Definitely bringing other friends here next time. 📍 Tengqiang Shantou Yellow Beef Hot Pot (Headquarters) 79 Dongxiaonan Rd (next to Jiangnan Xinyuan West Gate) Biting Spring “Biting Spring” is a food tradition for the Start of Spring in China—“using seasonal ingredients, staying healthy with the flow” carries wishes for bumper harvests and thriving life. Now, “biting Spring” mostly means eating spring veggies: bamboo shoots, broad bean kernels, wild greens, that sort of thing. The terrace tomatoes gave a few more fruits. I lined the bottom of the pot with northern cabbage, threw in chopped tomatoes, Jinhua ham slices, pork, and bamboo shoots, simmered on low heat for an hour without adding water, then tossed in cabbage leaves and broad bean kernels at the end. All of spring’s in this pot.
